The Piper J-3 Cub saw service during WWII as the L4 Grasshopper. Several different variants were used throughout the war with about 5700 miliary versions used. The 5th Armored Division used the L4 as a reconnaissance aircraft and artillery spotter. It would not have been uncommon to see the little L4 flying overhead. Lt. Merritt D. Francies, 71st AFA, "HQ" Co. was one such pilot.
