Whenever a deceased soldier could not be identified they were assigned an X number. In the case of SGt. Daniel W. Morris, we believe his body was assigned X-29. What we do know is that Sgt. Morris was killed in a battle on the grounds of a chateau that belonged to Count Fleurieu at Dangeul, France. The battle occurred on 10 August, 1944. We also know that he was the tank commander of C-17 serial number 3022946; a Sherman M1 A-1. The tank was hit in the turret ring by a German 88mm shell and completely burned.

He was buried in the community cemetary at Dangeul, France by local citizenry. He was later moved to the temporary American cemetary at Corneille by American forces and subsequently reached his final resting place at St. James Cemetery, which has been renamed the Brittany American Battle Monuments Commission Cemetery. We believe he is buried in Section K, row 18, grave 2.
